Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you move in:

Leave a walkway down the center of your unit to make accessing items easier.

Cover up. Protect your furniture, including mattresses and box springs, with covers designed for the item.

Multi-task. Use your refrigerator or other appliances to store things like linens – even books or CDs.

Wedge the door of any appliances open so air can circulate inside them.

Leave a little space between the walls of your unit and your stored items to allow for ventilation.

Prep your tools. If you're storing a gas-powered lawnmower or leaf blower, prevent unpleasant odors by draining the tank before you put it in your unit.

Map It. As you move into your storage space, make a simple drawing that shows where items are placed.

What are some storage and reuse tips for an uncovered storage unit?
Before you store:
  • Wash it. Although you're not using your vehicle, it's best to give it a good clean to maximize the ability of the vehicle's finish to withstand any elements.
  • Don't activate the parking brake. And if your vehicle is a manual transmission, keep it in neutral. You can use tire stoppers or car stands to hold your vehicle in place.
  • Pack it. Place a few packets of silica or de-humidifier inside the vehicle to preserve the interior.
  • Over inflate the tires on your vehicle or trailer by five lbs. to minimize flat-spotting and ensure a longer service life.
  • Protect the battery. When storing a vehicle, take out the battery and keep it on a float-charger so when you're ready to ride, your ride is ready to run. If you can't remove the battery, disconnect it.
  • Keep bugs, insects and rodents out. Cover gaps like the exhaust pipe and close ventilation systems using the air conditioning controls. Also, it helps to place moth balls on the floor around the vehicle.
After you store:
  • Check the tire pressure and if under, inflate to the recommended level.
  • Check the brakes. As a note, it's not unusual for a bit of squeaking due to rust to accumulating on the components; but in most cases, this goes away in a short period of time.
  • Check the fluids levels. Make sure there have been no leaks.
  • Examine for critter damage. Bugs, insects and rodents can severely damage wires, so be sure to give the engine and interior a thorough investigation.
  • Check headlights, turn signals, brake lights and tail lights.

Items that cannot be stored:

Some items cannot be stored because they are hazardous. These items includes but not limited to: flammable items (paint, varnish, paint thinner, kerosene, oil, gasoline, etc.), corrosives, explosives, matches, lighters, fireworks, furniture polish and other items deemed toxic or dangerous by state and federal law.

For your personal protection and safety, we recommend that you do not store the following items: personal documents, cash, jewelry, securities, furs, art, family photos, deeds, wills and other valuable personal items.
